3rd & 4th Grade Retention

3rd Grade Retention Information

Starting with the 2022-23 school year, the Tennessee Learning Loss Remediation and Student Acceleration Act requires any 3rd grade student that is not proficient in the literacy portion of the TCAP to repeat the 3rd grade or receive additional instruction in literacy to be promoted to the 4th grade.

In Hamilton County Schools, we care. All children are thriving readers.

4th Grade Retention Information

4th graders that required interventions (Summer Reach and/or tutoring) to be promoted to the 4th grade have two routes to be promoted to the 5th grade.

  • Option 1: Make adequate growth as defined by the State of Tennesse on the 4th grade TCAP from the score they received in the 3rd grade. Please note districts will not receive data to know if adequate growth was made until July 1.
  • Option 2: 4th graders that do not make adequate growth can be promoted to the 5th grade through the creation of an Individual Promotion Plans. These plans are completed by the school, and can be found under “forms” on PowerSchool. Individual Promotion Plans must include tutoring during the school day in 5th grade.
